The dream lasts eight hours and 30 minutes, long enough for a good night's sleep in one of the stylish Art Deco wagons. Like an Agatha Christie novel, the cosy rooms, with mahogany panelling and crimson silk, create an intriguing atmosphere. It hearkens back to a time when travel was an art form. The refined Le Tonkin dining car is part of this timeless experience. Through the large windows, the wild and untamed landscape of the northwest region whips by, defying us to attempt its roads.
The Victoria Express Train travels between Hanoi and Lao Cai six times a week. Here, the mountains are higher, the hills steeper, and the forests denser. At the 40-kilometre mark, perched at 1,650 metres, Sapa dominates with the idyllic scenery of the rice terraces that made this mountain resort famous.
